Pollokshields Primary School,
241 Albert Drive
David Barclay
David Barclay (H&D Barclay), 1882.
Dating from 1882 it was designed by H & D Barclay in the Scottish Renaissance style. The two-storey building features triple windows with pilasters which are fluted on the ground floor and have sculptured panels on the first.
In 1920 it became Albert Road Academy and it became Pollokshields Senior Secondary School in 1926 and finally Pollokshields Primary School in 1962.
In 1882, on the 21st of March, a playground shelter in the school collapsed on top of around 30 children. Two girls died at the scene and a girl and boy died later from their injuries. The architect David Barclay and four tradesmen were charged with culpable homicide and tried but were set free. However, The Govan Parish School Board were found to be negligent through lack of supervision.
